Fantasy Writing Prompt Day 6: Monster Prompt

You can still join this challenge if you’d like. Here’s the original link describing the goals/rules: Fantasy Writing Prompt Blitz-o-Rama.

Day 6-Monster Prompt-Write a story from the POV of a monster.

This is one of the simpler prompts I came up with, but one you could have the most fun with. Grendel is a good book that shows how doing a story like this can turn out pretty awesome.

Again, if you have a story to share from this prompt, send it to me at philoverby1@gmail.com for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. This only lasts until the end of September 2013, so give it a try now!

Here’s my entry:

Diary of a Broken-Hearted Goblin
by Philip Overby
Skullcracksday, Weasel Month, Day 34 of the Green Moth Calendar

Dear Diary,

The elves did quite a number on us today. Garlak lost his left eye in quite a gruesome encounter with an elf’s boomerang. Nasty creatures they are. I was attempting to enjoy some tea with my lady love, Jurka, but the bloodshed made that nigh impossible. I rather hope the fighting will die down just for a day or so. I am planning to propose to her soon. I’ve collected the require elf ears for her dowry. I hope her father will be pleased. He is quite a disagreeable goblin. I guess I will find out tomorrow. I pray that the elves all fall into a massive pit full of razors, tigers, and razortigers.

Sincerely Yours,

Timbraz Grubmouth, Shaman of the Twisted Red Root Tribe

Bloodystumpday, Weasel Month, Day 35 of the Green Moth Calendar

Dear Diary,

More raids today from the elves. When will all this killing stop? I’ve written several letters to them, begging them for a ceasefire. I’ve only been answered with my arrows. The elves are a rather uncouth bunch. I heard that the skinned Yunbar and made a flag out of him. What kind of horrid creature would do such a thing? Jurka is scared. We have prepared to elope with our without her father’s approval. This conflict is just too much for us to bear. I pray our journey will be safe. The tundra of Soul’s End is not known for being forgiving. I’m packing a warm coat.

Sincerely Yours,

Timbraz Grubmouth, Shaman of the Twisted Red Root Tribe

Brainbashday, Weasel Month, Day 38 of the Green Moth Calendar

Dear Diary,

Our journey has not gone well. Some elves have been on our trail for quite some time. They have a particular interest in Jurka of which I’m not aware. She has contracted some kind of illness from the unforgiving cold of the tundra. I’ve taken sick as well. I don’t suspect we’ll make it as far south as we wished. Our goal was to make it Graveport and take a skiff west to the Niveral Islands. Our food is running low and my hands are cramping even now as I write. I pray for our safe arrival. If I catch one of these elves following us, I may just gut him and make a dinner of his corpse. I am that hungry as to take such drastic measures.

Sincerely yours,

Timbraz Grubmouth, Shaman of the Twisted Red Root Tribe

Brokenhornday, Weasel Month, Day 38 of the Green Moth Calendar

Dear Diary,

I’m afraid to say, that Jurka has passed away. I’ve since backtracked to where the elves that were tracking us were last seen. Carrying Jurka’s body on my back, I will accept nothing but a proper goblin burial for her. I am sad to report that I murdered the elves in their sleep. I dripped a toxic mixture from the Gajerla root into their ears. They die quite noisily. I was reduced to cooking their bodies for my dinner. They were much tastier than I expected, especially their legs, although they were a tad gamy. Luckily, I had some honey mead with me, which made the whole meal go done a lot smoother. I don’t expect I will try elf again anytime soon. My sickness is fading, which makes me rather morose. I had hoped to die from choking on an elf bone. I want to be reunited with my Jarka some way. I miss her twisted smile.

Sincerely yours,

Timbraz Grubmouth, Shaman of the Twisted Red Root Tribe

This diary was discovered ten days after its last entry by a patrol of elves. It was translated into elvish and then re-translated into the common tongue. It’s suspected some of the sentiments were lost in translation. Timbraz was found dead near the diary. Feet away was a shallow grave, presumably for Jarka, who was mentioned in the text. Upon further investigation, it appeared that Timbraz didn’t die of any specific illness, exposure, or wounds. He was found clutching his chest.

In an effort to preserve the renewed peace between goblins and elves, this diary will be submitted to the Twisted Red Root Museum of Peace where it will be enshrined with other war relics.
